Where we come together

The house

A hundred-year-old chalet above Grindelwald, with wooden floors that are allowed to creak, a bright practice room, a sauna in the basement and a kitchen where someone is preparing something good all day. Every one of our retreats takes place here.

Details on this page, such as room sizes, are approximate placeholders. Photos are to come; until then the striped frames show what will be pictured.

The house in short

The chalet stands alone on the slope, above the village and below the tree line. It was built a little over a hundred years ago, renovated with care a few years back and has room for a small group. Nobody else shares the house with us: for the length of a retreat it belongs to the guests and the teachers.

Inside it is kept simple. Pale wood, wool blankets, lots of light, little decoration. There are no televisions and no noise, but there is a common room with a stove where people stay on in the evening.

Rooms

You choose a room type when you enquire. Every room is furnished simply and quietly, with bed linen and towels. Which room types can be booked for a retreat is listed on that retreat’s page.

Double bed or two beds pushed together, private bathroom, valley view. For two people travelling together; the price is per person.

The largest room in the house, for one: wooden floor, an armchair by the window, private bathroom and a south-facing balcony that gets the first sun.

    1 guest

The studio

The practice room is on the top floor under the old beams, with windows on two sides and doors that stand open when the weather allows. The floor is oiled spruce, warm underfoot, and there are no mirrors on the walls.

Mats, blocks, straps, blankets and bolsters are ready for you; you need not bring anything. In the morning we practise in the first light, in the evening by candlelight. Between sessions the room stays open if you would like to stretch alone or simply sit.

Sauna and recovery

In the basement there is a wooden sauna for the whole group, with a shower and a rest room with loungers. There are no time slots; we heat it after a walk or before dinner.

Outside you will find a garden with deckchairs and a small mountain lake within walking distance. You can book a massage in the house as an extra on site, usually in the afternoons.

Food and nourishment

We eat together, at one long table and without hurry. Three meals a day are part of the retreat, along with tea, coffee, water and fresh juices whenever you like. We cook simply and with care, so that you can still practise or walk well after a meal.

  • Regional

Bread from the village, cheese and milk from the alp, vegetables and herbs from the area, as far as the season allows.

  • Seasonal

What reaches the table follows the week’s market: herbs and rhubarb in early summer, pumpkin, mushrooms and apples in autumn.

  • Vegetarian

The kitchen is vegetarian, with dairy and eggs. There is no meat or fish.

Dietary options

Vegetarian is the default. On request we cook:

  • vegan
  • gluten-free

For other needs, such as lactose-free or nut-free, please tell us when you enquire. We will tell you honestly whether we can cover them.

A note on allergens

We cook in a single kitchen, where gluten, milk, eggs, nuts, celery and mustard are also handled, so we cannot rule out traces. If you have an allergy or intolerance we will talk to you before you travel, and we will tell you the ingredients of any dish on request.

Surroundings

Footpaths start at the door and lead through meadows and woods; the mountain lake is a good half hour away, and the north face of the Eiger stands to the south. You can walk to the village, which has a bakery and a small shop. On some retreats we spend a whole day walking, with a mountain railway and a picnic.

The chalet sits at about 1,180 metres. The air is clear, the nights are cool and the evenings are quiet.
