Questions
Good to know before you come
The questions we are asked most. If yours is not here, write to us and we will answer personally.
Before you book
Do I need to be fit?
Not for most weeks. The calmer yoga retreats make no particular demands, and every posture comes with a gentler version. Two kinds of week ask for more: the walking week includes walks of four to six hours with up to 900 metres of climbing, and the reformer week assumes some pilates experience. Every retreat states its level; if you are unsure, write to us.
Are beginners welcome?
Yes. Most retreats need no experience, in yoga or in pilates. The exception is the reformer week, where you should already know the basics of pilates. Each retreat names its level, and we are happy to help you choose the week that suits you.
Can I come on my own?
Very much so; many of our guests do. Groups are small, twelve guests at most, and eating together at one long table makes arriving easy. If you need your own space, we have single rooms. If you would rather travel for less, you share a twin room with a guest of the same gender; we pair guests in advance.
Is there an age limit?
Our retreats are for adults aged 18 and over. If you are younger, or would like to travel with a teenager, please write to us first and we will see whether it works. There is no upper limit as long as you feel up to the week.
Do I pay when I enquire?
No. An enquiry is not binding and costs nothing. We check availability, confirm your room by email, and only then send the invoice. Nothing is due before that. The amount and the payment deadline are on the invoice.
What if I have to cancel?
You can withdraw an enquiry at any time, free of charge, until your room is confirmed. The booking terms, including the cancellation deadlines, come with that confirmation, so you can read them before you pay anything. We strongly recommend travel and cancellation insurance; it is not included in the price.
At the retreat
Do I have to join every session?
No, every session is optional. The programme is an invitation, not a timetable: if you would rather sleep, read, walk or lie in the sauna, do that, and owe no one an explanation.
What should I bring?
Mats, blocks, blankets and bolsters are provided. Pack comfortable clothes you can move in, a warm layer for mornings and evenings, swimwear for the mountain lake and sauna, and sturdy shoes for the paths around the chalet. On the walking week you also need walking boots that are worn in and a rain jacket; we lend poles and head torches.
What about dietary needs and allergies?
We cook vegetarian, with local ingredients, and vegan or gluten-free on request. Put any dietary needs or allergies in the enquiry form; if there is something we cannot cover, we will tell you and talk it through with you before you book.
Is there wifi and phone signal?
There is wifi in the shared rooms. Mobile signal in the valley varies by provider, so do not count on phone calls from your room. We ask guests to put their phones away during sessions and at the table; for this week you are unreachable to anyone who can wait.
Practicalities
How do I get to the chalet?
By train to Grindelwald; from Zurich it is a little over three hours, via Bern and Interlaken Ost. We collect you at the station and take you back at the end of the week, so you do not need a car. You arrive in the afternoon and leave in the morning; the exact times are on each retreat.
What costs extra?
The price covers your room, full board, the programme, the station transfer and use of the sauna and mountain lake. On top come your travel, the municipality's tourist tax (settled on site), your insurance and extras such as a massage or a private session, which you can book on site. Each retreat lists exactly what is included.
